Message from Bishop Daniel Garcia

Dear brother priests and deacons,

Good afternoon!  I hope all of you are doing as best as possible during these challenging days.  I wanted to send a quick email to you regarding various things that are taking place.

First, as many of you already know through social media, all members of the faithful and other Christians are invited to participate in the special prayer of the Holy Father which is taking place in Saint Peter’s Square, tomorrow, FRIDAY, MARCH 27, 2020.  During the Statio orbis, which will be broadcast by Mondovision and streamed on the website of Vatican News (WWW.VATICANNEWS.VA) at 6:00 P.M. in Rome, 1:00 P.M. (EDT) and (10:00 A.M., PST), the Holy Father will grant to all participants the Plenary Indulgence before imparting the Urbi et Orbi blessing.  I realize this is late, but if you are able to, please notify your parishioners of this blessing through your website or Facebook page, if that is available to you.  We do mention it on our Diocesan website.

Secondly, the USCCB has been collecting examples of how our community of faith has sought to remain with one another in prayer during these difficult times.  You may find the list here:  In the days ahead, they will update this page as they find and you share additional resources.

Also, the Public Affairs and Episcopal Resources teams are partnering also with the Office of Divine Worship, the Office of Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth, and other Conference colleagues to develop new resources to help the faithful in our home prayer. These are being prepared for Catholic Current.  Those resources are here:

Thirdly, I am reviewing recent directives that I have just received from the Congregation of the Divine Worship and the Discipline of Sacraments as well as to the Office of Divine Worship of the USCCB, in regards to the celebration of the Holy Week in our respective parishes.  There are very specific details and instructions as to what can be done and what should not be done.  I will be sending to you some directives over the weekend regarding Holy Week, so please be patient.

As I have stated before, I am very edified by how all of you are creatively trying to maintain communication with your parishioners.  I know they appreciate all you are trying to do.

Your brother in Christ,

+Bishop Danny
